4 Days Tour

Fairbanks Aurora

Aurora is the collective name given to the photons (light) emitted by atoms, molecules and ions that have been excited by energetic charged particles (principally electrons) travelling along magnetic field lines into the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Aurora results from the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth’s magnetic field.

The colours in the aurora result from photons from specific energy level transitions in excited atoms, molecules and ions of the upper atmosphere returning to their lowest energy state. There are thousands of individual colours in an auroral display, but three are dominant in the visible spectrum. The brightest auroral line is generally a green line emitted by excited oxygen atoms. A red diffuse glow results from another oxygen atom transition. A purple colour results from a transition in a Nitrogen molecular ion. The mixture of the major green, red and purple emissions may combine to give aurora a general ‘whiteish’ appearance.

In Fairbanks, the aurora can be reached for almost 243 days (i.e. 2/3 year) in a year. Chena Hot Spring Resort is located about 45 kilometer north of Fairbanks. Enjoy viewing the breath-taking beauty in Alaska.

Fairbanks – Chena Hot Springs
Upon arriving in Fairbanks, your pre-arranged shuttle is waiting for you by the curb for tonight’s accommodation — Chena Hot Springs Resort. After checking in, you may enjoy the outdoor swimming pool. Chena is famous for Aurora (Northern lights) viewing, good luck. The beautiful colours result from photos from specific energy level transition in exciting atoms to lower energy levels. This display results in the bright green, pinks, and purples the Northern lights offer.

Chena Hot Springs
This morning is free to explore Chena Hot Springs or just simply relax in the resort. Visit the Ice Museum in the resort to view all the surreal life size sculptures made of ice, and do not forget to order an “Ice cube” Vodka to alleviate your mind (at your own expense). Book yourself an activity at the hotel desk for a Dog Sledding ride to experience this special transportation in the Northern country.

Fairbanks
After checking out, you will be transferred to Fairbanks. Do not forget to ask the driver for a photo stop at world famous “Alaska Pipeline”. You may take town shuttle to visit the interesting UAF Museum or arrange with the shuttle company to visit the joyful Santa Claus House. By the nighttime, an additional Aurora Trip is arranged to pick you up from your hotel and let you view the scenic phenomenon. Return to hotel around 1:00 am! Good luck!
