Great George St.

Beginning at the beautiful waterfront and stretching six blocks, Great George Street is a stunning street lined with displays of architectural evolutions featuring beautifully preserved Georgian Architecture on one side of the street and Gothic Revival on the other side. The street was in 1990 designated a national historic site due to its strong associations with the birth of this nation and its richness of domestic architecture dating back to the Confederation era.

Perhaps the most notable building on Great George St. is St. Dunstan’s Basilica Cathedral – largely considered to be the defining silhouette of Charlottetown.

Victoria Row

Victoria Row is located in downtown Charlottetown on Richmond St. between Queen St. and Great George St. The street is a cultural hub and features live entertainment from local artists, excellent farm-to-table restaurants, gourmet coffee shops, pubs, and artisan boutiques. During the summer, it is closed to vehicle traffic and is a pedestrian-only walkway.

Province House

The birthplace of confederation, setting of the Charlottetown Conference.

Province House is commonly referred to as the “birthplace of confederation”. In this building in 1864, the majority of the Charlottetown Conference was held. The conference was originally intended as a meeting between maritime representatives to discuss a union. When the Province of Canada (consisting of present-day Ontario and Quebec) heard of the conference, they wished to join as well to discuss forming a union that would include them. The building has served as the home of the Provincial Legislature since 1847.

What You'll Do
  • Your walking tour of Charlottetown starts on the city’s waterfront at Confederation Landing.
  • From here, the tour will progress up Great George St. which is known for the evolution of architecture displayed here with its beautifully preserved Georgian architecture on one side of the street and Gothic Revival architecture on the other side. While on this street, you will pass by the Bishops Palace and the Basilica Cathedral which is considered to be the defining silhouette of Charlottetown.
  • Continuing onward, guests will stroll the grounds of Province House - also known as the birthplace of Confederation before heading over to Victoria Row. This area is well known for its daily live entertainment, local artists, artisan shops, cafes, and farm-to-table restaurants.
  • Guests will continue onward to view the Confederation Centre of the Arts where the world-famous Anne of Green Gables play has been running for over 50 years! Your tour will then continue on to pass multiple points of interest including Confederation Court Mall, City Hall, and Rochford Square before heading over to the Prince Edward Island government buildings.
  • The government buildings are a stunning example of brutalist architecture. Here you will visit the Beaconsfield Historic House and the Government House of Prince Edward Island - which today serves as the home of the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.
  • After this, the tour will start to head back toward the starting point by following the Victoria Boardwalk. Along the way, guests will pass by the Culinary Institute of Canada, the Queen Charlotte Armoury, the PEI Convention Centre arriving back at Peakes Quay and Confederation Landing for the end of your tour.
