Citadel Hill is also sometimes referred to as Fort George as well as the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. From an aerial view, one will quickly notice that Halifax’s Citadel is star-shaped which was typical of forts built by the British military in the 1800s century. The original Citadel Hill actually dates back to the mid-1700s. The large hill overlooking the harbour below made for a great vantage point for the British to protect the town. Construction of the Citadel in its current form was completed in 1856.
Historically, this hill served as an important military defense point. Today, re-enactment interpreters bring history to life here so visitors can learn about and experience history while on site.
